Wood Fence Maintenance Best Practices

When you really look at all that is required for wood fence maintenance, it’s not bad at all and you only do it every few years or so.. In just about all cases, this kind of maintenance will not take much time unless there’s a problem. What you will need to do is stain it again after a few years, and of course washing it down is recommended. If you do not like doing any work on these things, then a pre-stained wooden fence is the way to go, so this is up to you.

Addressing Stains

Until you get used to doing maintenance, it may be helpful if you plan things out from the start and have everything together. Avoid having large clumps of stain in spots because it will run and drip off the fence and dry that way. Most contractors will steer you away from painting but in the end it’s your call. Weather will include the temperature and humidity which is similar to painting your indoor rooms in your house, and be very sure that you read, understand, and follow the directions on the can. Of course you want the fence to come out looking terrific, and this is only possible when you do it as it is recommended by the manufacturer.

Check Connecting Elements

What kind of nails and connecting elements do you prefer? Most just go with the metal connectors but it is something to think about. It is helpful to look ahead with any decision like this because you can identify potential problems. You probably have seen nails that are loosening up and sliding out, and this is very common with nails in wood. Some points are unique to wooden fences while others are not and they may be unique to metal. Most people simply hammer the nails back in until they’re flush once again, but check out the nail and if it appears to be corroded, then it’s best to replace it.

Regular Cleaning

Performing maintenance on your fence is done for a reason, and one of them is that regular cleaning will keep the mold growth under control. The only time you want to use bleach water is to kill mold that is growing on the fence. Just read what the instructions say, and while the installation contractor is there you can ask him questions. Simply get your hose out and try it out and see if there is any difference between treated wood and dirty wood.

One thing about a wood fence is that neglecting good maintenance procedures need to be in place all the time. Most of the time you’ll just be doing a visual check but it’s still important to do this. Everything is designed to make this better and more effective, and it will keep your fence in pristine condition for a very long time.
